Comparing Precipitation Options in HMS and GSSHA

CEEn-531 Dr. Nelson

To turn in:

Hopefully you have noticed some differences between the available options for defining rainfall in HMS, in GSSHA, and similar methods between the two models. Using your analyses, and any others you can think of to help you understand or develop a hypothesis, comment on why results are similar, or dissimilar.

In your report you should:

  1. Briefly summarize each method, noting things that behaved as expected, or unexpected.

  2. Compare the temporal distribution methods of HMS

  3. Compare the temporal distribution methods of GSSHA

  4. Compare the spatial computation of rainfall totals as determined in HMS. (Arithmetic average, Thiessen polygons, NEXRAD, etc.)

  5. Compare the spatial computation of rainfall totals as determined in GSSHA. (Arithmetic average, Thiessen Polygons, NEXRAD, etc.)
  6. Compare similar methods of HMS to GSSHA (uniform, TypeII, and actual)

  7. Make any observations on interesting comparisons you may have come up with.
  8. Conclusions and observations about defining precipitation models
